In these austere times and the complete lack of tourists from china at present one has to wonder if there was sufficient market for the outrageously priced bird spit.

Hopefully the company was well insured against such an unfortunate event or they will simply have to swallow their pride.

Yes way. It's incredibly big business throughout particular parts of Asia.

Yep. If you ever get the chance take the hydro ferry out from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tao. You will see huge high cement buildings that seem to be made for this. Interesting to see.

Bht 5000 per bird ? No way.

Oh, yeah.  I've begun researching into building one of those swiftlet houses in the wife's moo bahn as a retirement and family income strategy.

There are hundreds of those towers to attract the birds in Malaysia also.

I have chatted with a few of the locals about it and they make a very good living from it.

---> "they discovered the remains of more than 1 million birds instead of the nests they were tasked with collecting.

The team found the remains of a fire and various trash strewn about including shoes and plastic bottles." <---

Remains of a fire ...

So , somebody went to that cave and lit a fire , may be put some plastic rubbish in it ... Toxic smoke can easily kill a lot of birds in a cave .

I hope they find the one who is responsible for this and make him pay ...

But if , the excuse will be that he did not realize the consequences of his acts ... just as always ... too many stupid people around .

Yeah I have taken that Saigon ferry to Vungtau near 6 times over the years for a short quick fun trip before flying out, and very fun to see them every time off the water.

The company using these birds for profit is to blame. Now they act like they've got billions over billions in imaginatory losses but reality is they're not the victims here and should be revoked the license and rights to these caves until they implement measures that stop their poorly paid workers from lighting caves on fire.
