Yes, that’s Thailand for you. The clever part is that most tourists have no idea. They think it’s all Land of Smiles. Exotic food. Beautiful women. Sun kissed beaches and a party every night. Which of course is all true. But there is a significant darker side to Thailand that remains well below the radar, until it’s too late.
What you describe should happen is of course totally correct. The fact it doesn’t, shows just how serious successive governments see police corruption. It’s the same with motoring offences. Just look at the pathetic excuse for the recent penalty points system introduced. It’s all window dressing and facade building to fool international pressure groups and foreign governments. The problem is, it also fools the majority of nearly 40million tourists every year.

I always carry a copy of my passport and an emergency contact number for people in Thailand who know me and a family member back in the U.K. it’s helpful if stopped by police or in an accident. Ultimately it’s kind to your family should the worst happen and you end up like this poor soul. I also ensure I have insurance and a copy of the policy details are left with a family member back home. All seems obvious to me, but I guess some people just don’t give a fu*k
As I read this article I found myself largely agreeing with it. Until I got to this part:
A minor offence like vaping, small amounts of drug possession, drunk driving, or speeding may come with negotiable fines.
Drunk Driving is a “minor offence”. Really!! Try telling that to the thousand who have lost their loved ones due to drunk driving. I wouldn’t mind, but this is written by a westerner. Idiot! Unfathomable!
