Thailand likely to remain on U.K's Red list

A data expert on the Covid Virus has given his professional opinion that Thailand will stay on the U.K's Red list this coming  week .

Thailand submitted very little data , given the fear over mutant strains and Beta in particular , He thinks that Thailand will stay on the Red list until it can do more genomic  screening

Seems like our only hope of getting back to the U.K without hotel quarantining is if the U.K does away with the colour codes , its already been suggested that the Green and Amber categories combine into one category

Why isn't Thailand supplying the necessary data? Surely they should be doing everything possible to try and revive their tourist industry. Are they trying to hide something?

It seems that Thailand hasnt been doing mass testing and therefore its not known the extent of infections and theres also the concern that a new strain could mutate and go undetected and spread to the U.K and if a new strain arrived in the U.K. the U.K would have to go back into lockdown

As I keep saying, this is not about (mass) testing. Remember, Thailand previously held amber status before the last review.

The Department of Transport said that it has made the decision to move Thailand and Montenegro to the red list because to reflect "the increased case rates in these countries and the higher risk that travel from these countries poses to UK public health".

It added in a statement: "The high rates combined with lower levels of published genomic surveillance in Thailand and Montenegro than other countries, mean that an outbreak of a new variant or existing variants of concern (VOC) or variants under investigation (VUI) cannot be easily identified before it is imported and seeded across the UK."

Genomic surveillance is not mass testing!

I am an analytical expert and I predict that Thailand will revert to amber on the 16th September review, or the 7th October review.

The country will be opened by 1st November so might as well change to amber now.

Thank-you , I am currently in Thailand and waiting to get back to the U.K and I want to avoid the expensive quarantine in the U.K , so will wait until those restrictions are lifted .

Fingers crossed for you, I hope you get the change to amber at tomorrow's review.

Today is when the UK colour list will be updated .

Turkey is expected to go Amber and Thailand is expected to stay Red .

That depends on what media reports you read. But today it is being hoped in many quarters that they will most likely decide to do away with the "Traffic light scheme" which it is suggested will become effective from 1st Oct along with the changes to those countries in the current red, amber and green zones.

The reports do seem quite unanimous  in their opinion that Thailand will stay on Red and there have been suggestions that Green and Amber Countries will be combined into one group . That will leave just either Red or Green

Yes that is what that link I posted reported except there is no mention of Thailand in it. Thanks for repeating it to save people needing to read it 😉

I saw it live on Sky News

That's strange I was watching that too, never heard it. BBC not reporting it , only a minister saying an update will be released later.

If it's repeated I'll send a photo as video is not allowed I think.

Well Grant Shapps, The Transport secretary is due to give an update later today so I don't see how it could have been stated only perhaps speculated upon as it has not yet been officially announced what the changes are.

Yes, I know he's going to announce changes. But they definitely said it already. Wouldn't be the first time something came out prior to the announcement. Wait and see. Won't be long. They're just now limiting their comments to "the announcement" ...

Thailand remains on red list.

COVID-19: Travel traffic light system scrapped - and changes to coronavirus tests for fully jabbed holidaymakers announced

A major relaxing of travel rules for people coming in and out of England have been announced by the transport secretary.

From 4 October, the current traffic light system of red, amber and green countries will be scrapped and replaced with one red list only.

Travel traffic light system scrapped - follow live updates

Anywhere not on the red list is considered green and clear for travel - there will no longer be an amber list.

Also from that date, travellers will no longer need to take pre-departure tests for travelling into England from abroad.

Then, from the end of October, fully vaccinated passengers from non-red list countries will be able to replace day-two PCR tests with cheaper lateral flow tests.

Those unvaccinated will still have to pay for PCR tests.

Anyone testing positive will need to isolate and take a free confirmatory PCR test which would be genomically sequenced to help identify new variants.

This means the new system, which is expected to stay in place at least until the New Year, should be in effect as people return from half-term breaks.

The government has also announced that from 4am on 22 September, eight destinations will be removed from the red list.

The destinations are:

• Turkey

• Pakistan

• The Maldives

• Egypt

• Sri Lanka

• Oman

• Bangladesh

• Kenya

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: "Today's changes mean a simpler, more straightforward system. One with less testing and lower costs, allowing more people to travel, see loved ones or conduct business around the world while providing a boost for the travel industry.

"Public health has always been at the heart of our international travel policy and with over 44 million people fully vaccinated in the UK, we are now able to introduce a proportionate updated structure that reflects the new landscape."

Later speaking to reporters, Mr Shapps continued: "We wanted to bring a new, simpler, easier to navigate and cheaper system as well and so we have bought this in until the New Year at the very least and the purpose is to make it easier for people to travel without the bureaucracy, without so many tests and with a greater level of certainty - now that we have got so many people vaccinated."

The transport secretary said the change could not have been made sooner because the scientific advice did not favour it.

The regular three-weekly update of which destinations are designated green, amber and red had been due on Thursday but it was delayed by the Prime Minister Boris Johnson's cabinet reshuffle.

The changes will apply to England only.

Travel industry representatives are likely to welcome the move which allows greater freedom for individuals to travel in the lead up to Christmas.
