Recommended Posts

Today marked 3 new Covid-19 infections identified in international travellers who arrived via the Phuket Sandbox programme but saw no new Covid-19 deaths on the island and 240 new infections, down 2 from yesterday’s daily total. Another milestone was hit, this time more positive than yesterday’s surpassing of 5,000 infections in Phuket, as today saw the number of people recovered and discharged from medical care after contracting Covid-19 pass 3,000 with 3,095 people recovered. Breakdowns of Phuket data from the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office report late last night, all collected since the start of the third wave of Covid-19 […]

80% of hospital beds on Phuket full.

Unfortunately this Sandbox idea becomes less appealing by the minute.

If people are not already concerned, then they should be.

This is a cleare indicator that the authorities have mismanaged the Sandbox, and that the situation is running away faster than they can.

Depressingly bad times to come I fear.

Just now, MrStretch said:

This Litterbox is blowing up.

In "the south" only Yala has more new Covid infections that Phuket does.

For all the 'containing', they haven't contained much, now, have they?

Looks the same as a gambling addiction.

Hoping against hope after you go past your agreed limit and lose everything.

They said they weren't going further than 90 a week.

Should have stopped there and then.

240 new daily reported cases.

Original plan, the Phuket organizers and local government officials put a cap of no more than 90 new reported cases in ONE WEEK!

NOW at 240 new daily reported cases

This is about 800 percent over their own threshold !

80% capacity of hospital beds.

2222 total hospital beds

495 available. Within another month,  hospitals will be over 100 percent capacity.

The vast majority of beds filled with covid patients.

Why allowed to continue?

Food for thought...

Since most small businesses are still closed, the biggest recipients of the money from the international arrivals have been the big hotels. Only government approved hotels.

Big businesses such as hotels can afford to pay "hidden unreported, secret" payments.

You figure out the rest why this is allowed to continue.

In 2019, pre-covid, Phuket had almost 10 million visitors. The vast majority were international travelers.

Since Sandbox opened, it is reported that in just over 2 months, only about 28,000 international arrivals.

Even if this increases and doubles to 30,000 a month it is not helping the majority of the small businesses and vendors who depend on mass tourism.

Think of this as a Sand Bucket with each tourist as a grain of sand.

10 million grains of sand to fill the bucket.

28 000 grains inserted into the bucket

28,000 is 2.8 percent of 10 million

The Sand Bucket is less than 3 percent filled, while the Phuket hospital beds are now at 80 percent capacity with the vast majority covid patients.  Within another month, Phuket hospitals will probably be over 100 percent cap

Therefore,  pray tell, how can this be classified as a success?

Inquiring minds want to know.
