Being from a country where they drive on the right, it's possible that he forgot to look left. His brain went into automatic mode, he casually glanced to the right, saw the empty road and crossed. It happens more easily than one would think.

Plus Thais have very bad eyesight at night, and the roads are not well light. This is not a Nanny State like France - poor bugger hope he recovers OK.
