7.7 Earthquake at 1:20 PM on March 28, 2025

Recommended Posts

Quite a few aftershocks since about 7 PM last night.  All between 4.5 and 4.9.

Are you feeling any of those, @cmsally?

Haven't felt a thing here since about 3pm yesterday. Lots of aftershocks in various places but it normally takes a 5+ on the Richter scale for us to feel anything.

Checked the house and buildings for cracks, nothing that I can see. Off to check out of town house this morning. We built everything like a fort to withstand earthquakes etc. so should be OK. I would say it was stronger in Hang Dong as some pots that were perched on other pots or walls, fell off and broke. No such damage in town.

Was comparing experiences with some friends this morning and they confirmed what I thought had happened. The unusual factor that I have never experienced before was that we were literally tipped up, ie. I was in a large room on the second floor (which of course is normally perfectly horizontal) and the NW corner of the room was most definitely lower than the rest of the room for at least a few seconds. They were on the ground and experienced the same thing. It was an extremely bizarre feeling.

Chinese construction company, government contract (State Audit Office),  only a few typically Thai dots to connect and the picture is clear. And for this one building collapse, they shut down an entire city of 10+ million people?

Why paralyze a major city for an event which happened 1100km away? Irrational panic can be as costly as reckless indifference. Have we learned nothing from Covid? Are we doomed to repeat this knee-jerk panic every time something unexpected (but inevitable) occurs?

To a layman such as myself, it's incredible that the quake occured in Myanmar and then "travelled" so far down South before hitting Bangkok the way it did.

It seems to have happened on the Sagaing Fault which stretches south into the Andaman Sea. I'm guessing the geology of the fault line has a lot to do with the wide area affected.

I have just given the British Red Cross £100 towards their appeal for help for Myanmar. Anyone care to match that, either to a local charity or one the big international aid agencies.

I hear you grumpy but I disagree in principle - no problem with others donating, but I will not. Unlike when that tsunami hit Thailand and Sri Lanka, and I did donate - quite a bit.  But many years ago the Nth Korean dictatorship was on the verge of collapse - people were dying of starvation and there were riots starting. Then arose a drive to send them food and many people donated money to red cross etc. I said no we should not do that because the People of Nth Korea would be better off if we sent them guns - then they could overthrow the Junta dictatorship.  I was right.  Same same for Myanmar - send them more guns - not food and money - the Junta and the powerful rich will take most of it anyway - that is how they are - far worse than Thailand - totally corrupt.

I believe that it travelled through Thailand and down the natural path (where all the waters go) towards Bangkok, and then when it got close to the ocean it was slowed like an ocean wave when arriving close to shore.  There was much spreading of the forces all over Thailand, but me thinks that it flowed down towards Bangkok much more than the other places and then was slowed.

This map records 8.2 at the epicentre and seems to show that a long section of the fault line ruptured.

I know Sri Lankans who were affected in 2004 and they did not see a penny from the millions which were generously donated by people across the globe. The villages were rebuilt thanks to very local fundraisers, essentially organised by villagers. The big "charities" are untrustworthy, in my opinion. But kudos to @Grumpish anyway, hopefully at least part of his donation will be used well.

I've read a few news stories and all of them portray the Myanmar "regime" as being unable to take care of the problem itself. This de facto opens the door to intervention to "help them", bearing in mind Myanmar has been in the crosshairs of Soros-backed NGOs for a long time. It will be worthwhile to observe what they push for and/or do in the coming weeks.

I have heard from a few people that know Burma quite well and they say that currently the government controls only a small part of the country. Sagaing (earthquake zone) is an area that they bomb quite heavily. There were reports of it being bombed just after the earthquake!

Sorry I know we are meant to post only English but this is an interesting video about China Railway Number 10 (the company building the collapsed structure in Chatuchak). It has a lot of details about the company ; can't find in English. Maybe get someone to translate if you are interested. Sorry no English version.

Digging up the history of "Sophon Michai", a major shareholder of a Chinese building contracting company. Tong. Shocked the past.

Digging up the history of "Sophon Michai", a major shareholder of a Chinese building contracting company. Tong. Shocked that the former was an ordinary employee and was deceived into using the name to cover the face of the real owner.

Those that have seen my 'tirades' in the past will know I have nothing but contempt for the Chinese (Thainese) scu***gs that have been taking advantage of Thailand since they left China when Mao took over - and those that came because of WW2. IMO the reason Chinese were driven out of Europe and Australia and USA etc etc., is because they are a corrupted people who have very few morals and SFA social integrity - they will cause nothing but problems - they will never assimilate - they only care about one thing - making money for them and their families. It is no coincidence that the vast majority of corrupt businesses in Thailand are Chinese owned, controlled, influenced etc etc. It is also no coincidence that they dominate the number of criminals arrested in Thailand - especially drugs, gambling and online scamming.  I hope that before I die, that the day comes when the Thai people rise up and throw them out - like the Fijians did to the Indians. When you hear the Thailand PM say (when in China) that she is Chinese - you know all you need to know about this issue - 90+% of the wealthy families are of Chinese origins and they are still Chinese.  The Chinese are the last great Empire still on earth - they have a very strong culture/society and they will 'absorb' all other cultures that they come into contact with.  Snap says there is no such thing as a virus - but the Chinese culture sure fits that definition - either that or they are a cancer - IMO they are both.
