7.7 Earthquake at 1:20 PM on March 28, 2025

Sitting here and I thought I was getting woosy.  I'm SE of Bangkok and felt it pretty good.  Anyone in Chiang Mai would have definitely felt it.

This is the "before" view of the building that collapsed in the video that went viral.  Fortunately it was under construction, so uninhabited.  Still, I imagine there were a lot of workers present.

Any victims? (Sorry, pretty busy today and don't have too much time to go reading the news).

I doubt any of the workers in the 30-story building under construction survived.  Probably won't get a tally of deaths for a day or two.

Last I heard was that 43 workers were caught inside. Not confirmed.

Felt it in Khon Kaen - just a little - thought my vertigo was playing up.

I've seen the after pics of that building and I can't imagine anyone coming out of it alive.  Perhaps some got trapped in the rubble as it came down.  But those inside I fear all perished.  A building that size must have had hundreds of construction workers inside.  30 stories.

This was the strongest earthquake I have ever experienced in terms of strength and duration. I have experienced others quite strong but they only lasted for a few seconds. This one was a good 3 minutes.

I live in a 2 storey house and wasn't particularly bothered until it went over 1 minute. I went downstairs when there was a bit of a lull and even downstairs it was difficult to stand up.

I think I can safely say there will be a lot of people looking for low rise housing.

Some of the condos have suffered a lot of damage from what I have heard.

Happy to know you're save and sound, Sally.  You were a lot closer than B angkok.  Only 466 km, or less than half the distance to Bangkok.

Hard to stand?  Oh my.

Let us know what the situation is there, Sally.  I'm sure more will be known tomorrow.

I saw some damaged ancient Thai ruins but not sure where.  I'm thinking Ayutthaya.  News here will be heavy tomorrow.  I'm surprised there's nothing on the Thaiger News subforum yet.

Maybe waiting for more specifics… I saw on French media that 40 people purportedly perished in that building.

My wife told me she had heard on the news this morning that there were over 400 construction workers.  Given 30 floors, I would think the vast majority were in the building when it collapsed.  Maybe we'll know more today.

Surprised more buildings didn’t fall. I presume many shifted/slumped. BKK is built on mush.

“The subsoil consists of the layer of top crust underlain by the soft to very soft clay, which has the thickness of about 8 to 15 meters. The closer to the Gulf of Thailand, the thicker the soft clay deposit can be found. The water content of the soft clay is ranged from 80-140 %.”
