Self locking hotel doors protect the occupants when in the room and their possessions when they are out of the room. It’s hardly a big brother initiative. That would something like showing your passport at reception.

Even when I know a door is self locking, I check it before I walk away. It is a habit so deeply ingrained that I do it at home, as well.

It isn't, however it is pretty much an industry norm in hotels to have self locking doors and that still doesn't answer the question of how self locking doors are 'big brother'.

This is of course the most widely understood meaning of the phrase and only the perverse would go out of their way to track down another definition to try to score petty points in an unimportant forum.
