Life in the Isaan Boonies.
Way out in the "boonies" is American Slang for the boondocks. The word "boondocks" originates from the Tagalog word "bundok," meaning "mountain," and was adopted into English by American soldiers stationed in the Philippines in the early 20th century. Synonyms for "boondocks" include "backwoods," "countryside," "rural areas," and "outback." -

News Forum - Foreigner assaults Thai man after alleged hit-and-run in Pattaya
This kind of behavior is of course not a new thing... citizen journalism, posted to Facebook, is the world we live in. If you're going to come and do stupid stuff... expect to get caught and face the consequences. Laying blame elsewhere is an excuse. The danger is... the more westerners act this way will create an atmosphere of animosity towards those of us trying to live here long term. These "tourists" behaving badly need to be punished. And I don't want to hear any whinging from the apologist crowd regarding how the authorities handle these cases or laying blame elsewhere except where it belongs. The fact is, if you're going to be stupid enough to get yourself into this kind of situation, then expect to be treated accordingly... with an equal amount of stupidity. We should all expect everyone involved to behave like adults (including the authorities investigating this)... but that clearly doesn't always happen now does it. Personally, I think these tourists, if they are found to have been the instigating party in all of this... should spend time in jail and pay a fine. -
