Again Stonker who's fault is it that has cost over a hundred men woman and kids there lives at kabul airport.

ISIS-K's, rather obviously, as well as the coalition's inability / unwillingness to do anything about them.

The US was not the only member of the coalition.

Wait and see ... all troops "panic" occasionally, but there are seldom reporters on the spot to see it.

when we defeated Argentina in the Falkland's war most of our combat troops  " Yomped " that means walked with over 45 kilo's of kit on from 1 side of the Falklands to the other side then beat them. That's how tough our combat troops are. Thats why we kicked Argentine Arse.

I don't want to help in de-railing the thread, nor is it to diminish the troops in the Falklands, but every point made in this post is totally factually incorrect.

Bit more than a face saving exercise as in turning it into a protectorate of the Empire it created the buffer country the British sought to protect India from Russia which is part of what the Great Game was all about .. the Durand Line agreement of 1893 defining Afghanistan's northern borders is the date most historians put as the end of the Great Game ..

Not entirely correct, as Afghanistan wasn't a British protectorate, although Britain had taken responsibility for its external affairs - it was still independent and recognised as such and, rather like now, the main thing Afghans were interested in was Afghanistan.

The Durand Line, as usual with British Empire borders, ignored the reality of tribal boundaries and divided Pashtun and Baluch alike, directly causing the border conflict that has been ongoing since 1947.

You have to look at the political situation in the UK and Russia  at the time also.

The 2nd afgan war was most certainly  mainly a face saving exercise.

After the humiliation of the 1st afgan war defeat and the many reports in the press at the time something had to be done to appease the british public and the british empire forces could also not be seen to have been defeated by a native army.

The relations between russia and the UK had also improved substantially by the time of the 2nd war also.

The great game only really existed in the minds of  hawkish britains and there were many who disagreed with the whole idea of a potential russian invasion of british India via afghanistan at the time.

As history has shown the russians never did have any intent of invading British India via afghanistan or any other way so it never really existed.

However you look at it the whole episode was a huge  mistake and the british gained absolutely nothing worth having out of it at the cost of many thousands of lives.

If you are ever in mumbai a trip to the afgan church in navy naga is well worth a look if you want to get an idea of the scale of loss of human life on one side .

And all for a bit of writing on a bit of paper!

Sounds like a very bad deal to me.

Are you referring to the Gold Medalists at 'friendly fire'?

The second afgan war was essentially a face saving exercise.

the great game was over by that time so it was all completely pointless anyway.

the last uninvited guest to take and retain control of afghanistan was alexander the great.

Thanks for this. It may be time for me to finally sit down and read some Afghan history.

But was it a tragic mistake  as was claimed it was by the Americans ? Or could it just be that they were so enraged by the cowardly Isis-K atrocity earlier they just saw red and simply undertook a revengeful and callous act needed to be quickly undertaken on the basis of wrong assumptions ? Of course we shall never know.

He already did. If you watch it on YouTube you have to change the speed to x1.25 so he sounds normal.

Using the word normal and Biden in the same sentence is very brave!
