Income requirement for legal marriage in Thailand

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I am aware that I need a proof of income for marriage visa but how is it for the marriage itself? I am a student living in thailand without an income, all my income comes from my family. My partner, a thai woman is a business owner with a fair income.

I noticed that on the Affirmation of Freedom to Marry form there is a field that asks for my job and my income.  Is it okay to put 0 there? I tried to google but didnt find anything or anyone talking about similar situation.

I‘m a bit worried about this, the embassy that gave me this form does not really know much about it.

Thanks.

There is no financial requirement to get married in Thailand, although there are fees to cover.
First check the requirements at the Amphoe where you intend to register the marriage.

Most will require an Embassy issued 'affidavit' of freedom to marry, and an Embassy certified copy of your Passport.
These then require translating into Thai, then legalising by the Thai MFA
Fees obviously apply for these services.

How to Get married in Thailand.odt

Once married, you can apply to stay in Thailand based on Thai spouse.
There is no 'marriage' visa, you first apply for a Non Imm O visa based on Thai spouse which grants a stay of 90 days, then you can apply to extend that 90 day permission of stay for 12 months every year.
Financial requirements apply for the Non Imm O visa and subsequent extensions of stay

It is OK to put 'student' and 0 as income.  Do you have a 'student' Visa?

As an addition to me answers - have you considered using an Agent?  Doing the Official Marriage all yourself can be problematic - I did it all myself and my advice is to not do that. Hire an Agent and they will organise everything for you - including the 'meeting' at the Provincial Office where you and the Thai wife get the paperwork finalised and then receive your Certificate.

PM me if you want a recommendation for someone in Bangkok who is married to a senior Thai Policeman. We used her some years ago when we needed a Police Clearance for the Wife - she also does Marriages (wish I knew that back then) and Visas etc.

As for the actual Annual Visa (Permission to Stay) she can also organise and do that too. However, after the first one, I now do the annual 'extensions' myself.

Being a student, you'll be on a budget and without deep pockets.
I certainly wouldn't recommend an agent for something you can easily do yourself for a fraction of the cost.

3 easy steps to get married in Thailand, paying the Embassy, translator and MFA fees only.

After marriage, you can apply for the Non Imm O visa and subsequent 1 year extension of stay.
An agent will typically charge 35,000 baht to complete the process when the actual cost is only 2,000 BHT for the Non Imm O visa, and 1,900 BHT for the 1-year extension.

35K?  Most Agents charge 12K-15K and some less if you are a 'frequent flyer'.

Getting an official marriage done in Thailand is not easy at all - the annual extension is far far easier.

For extension based on retirement with funds already in the bank.
Non Imm O visa + extension based on marriage, no funds > 35K.

British Embassy 9am appointment, translators by 1030, collected at 1200.
MFA at 1330, collected legalised documents 1600.
1830 flight back home.
My experience.

Agent can't help with the Embassy, neither.
