@Yinn, My girlfriend is from Myanmar, and we both can read and write Thai.  Myanmar Nationals are not all factory workers, and those that are have been locked into the factories or the construction camps.  My GF is/was a Salon owner and employed 3 Thai ladies.  I myself have also lived in Thailand for a long time, was married to a Thai lady, and have a Thai/American born daughter who is now 14.  Tired of your games, and non-truths.  My GF's daughter is a Thai citizen, born to a Thai father.  His entire Thai family had to isolate at home after testing positive on a ATK test kit.  His wife was hospitalized after starting to feel ill and needing more treatment, then my GF's daughter was taken to the hospital.  Tired of your BS and false information. I have many friends who work in the healthcare industry here in Thailand as well that are Thai.  Until I recently retired, I worked with the Insurance industry doing claims investigations.  Take your BS elsewhere.

Let's hope your advice is taken, fingers crossed anyway

Do you think things could be based on areas and if they are overwhelmed or not? Bangkok is certainly overwhelmed as we read and see the daily numbers. Do you think it also relates to what part of a city and which hospitals in that area as well? Meaning, if you are in an area that is still not overwhelmed, will they force you into their CV-19 health web?

In CM not sure, but I think if you are positive and the quarantine areas and hospitals and the system in place are not overwhelmed then you are probably treated like as having the plague and put into a hazmat situation with no choice or freedom. Phuket, the info is hard to decipher if you ask me.

This having no vaccine available for those who want to take it is sickening. Today there was a sign up for Moderna here. Me, my wife and daughter were able to get our info in, but my son got trapped and denied. Idiotic as is only was one by one. You would think that these morons would have the intelligence to at least have a sign up sheet with rules allowing a family that lives together to all get registered one time. They could plainly just disqualify people who falsely signed up.. I would like to think these people have high IQ's, but I am not going to try to fool myself. I am a bit hugely angry at the moment.

Yes it sure is difficult to find out the truth of the matter. For Phuket to continue it's sandbox successfully, only the real figures will do. So how is the vaccination rollout going? How many have been fully vaccinated?

Jason, are you expecting an honest answer from a reliable source? 555

I have a question:

Would it even be safe to travel to Phuket, not considering the virus risk? The entire island has been starved of any tourists for so long, and I can only imagine the money loving locals are just waiting for foreign preys to arrive and be devoured. Has robbery and crime rate climbed lately? Just curious. I know theft is extremely common.

I arrived on Friday and it's really quiet. So quiet, that it feels a bit uncomfortable as a female solo traveller. However, my partner can't join me since he's in a dark red zone in Bangkok and only vaccinated once.. I walked around a bit yesterday, there are no open shops, restaurants close by. It's all shutdown.. but no wonder, don't need to offer anything if there's nobody there to buy anything.

So yeah, it's like off-season travel but even less people. And the tourists do have a lot of attention on what they might do next.. ;D

And the Phuket sandstorm continues to blow, but sadly more cold than warm!  And your debut post, too, so thanks for that!

In terms of the target set by the Phuket government, periodically one can read an update here https://www.facebook.com/83ssj/?__tn__=-UC*F as to how many vaccinated.

The last update I read  or Phuket (dated 22-July-2021) indicated 428,114 had received at least 1-jab and 352,343, had received 2 jabs.   Using a target of 466,587 people in Phuket to be vaccinated, that gave about 92% having received 1-jab and about 75% having received 2-jabs.  ... I think the relevant page also notes while the target figure was 466,587, only 463,661 people had actually registered to be vaccinated.

Even this is misleading thou ... as I believe the actual Phuket population if one counts migrant workers, foreigner expats, and all children on the island, to be closer to 600,000 people.  Hence if one uses 600,000 as a base for the calculation of % vaccinated, then only 71% have received one jab and ~59% have received two jabs (again based on a 600,000 population estimate which may or may not be a valid number).

Given the mass exodus of workers from Phuket last year in June/July 2020 (after the lock down lifted), and then a slow trickle back in to Phuket during Q1/Q2 of this year, I don't think anyone really knows the population of Phuket.

Which part of Phuket are you staying in?  Most of the tourist areas Patong, Karon, Kata etc are as you describe but you may find more to do in Kamala, Bang Tao or Phuket Town.

‘Those are the tested confirmed cases. What is more scary is that of the 50 ICU beds available in Phuket, 24 are currently in use.

It is scary, but its been like this more or less for well over a week now, despite the increasing # of daily COVID cases.

Some figures (from a Thai gov't web site) going back to 4-August (I didn't record any prior to that):

4-August - 18 occupied

5-August - 16 occupied

6-August - 15 occupied

7-August - 19 occupied

8-August - 19 occupied

9-August - 20 occupied

10-August - 20 occupied

11-August - 20 occupied

12-August - 20 occupied

13-August - 24 occupied

14-August - 31-occupied

15-August - 24 occupied

16-August - 34-occupied

17-August - 25 occupied

18-August - 22 occupied

19-August - 24 occupied

20-August - 24 occupied

21-August - 24-occupied

22-August- 28-occupied

Thailand counts high risk cases with negative PCR test results as “infected”

No, they don't.

https://ddc.moph.go.th/viralpneumonia/eng/file/guidelines/G_en_21022020.pdf

And country-wide they do about 50k tests each day, of which 40% comes back positive. That's far higher than the world average, showing that likely not enough testing is done and/or testing isn't random but done only in high risk places.

Ergo, we need more testing so that all positives can delay their vaccination. Those vaccines can be used for others while there are shortages. And by the time the natural defence of the ones that tested positive diminishes, hopefully there will be plenty of vaccines.

Depends on what you want to do or see.

A scooter or regular taxi up to Big Buddha on a clear day is worth it for the views.  From there one might head into Central Phuket mall, usually opens at 11am (depending on covid restrictions).  Perhaps a ride back over Patong hill and thru Patong to complete the circuit.

For a day at the beach with more people around and far more shops/cafes etc open, Kamala Beach is nice.

Nothing really close to Kata that I can think of.

I drove through Kata and Karon Sunday morning it looks sad be careful walking around in the evenings,

I would say Rawai is the busier area just south of you, lots of farang still live in the area so it's pretty much normal a good selection of restaurants still open

Actually, the more concerning thing is the vast majority of the residents were vaccinated with Sinovac months ago. That's our ticking time bomb in Phuket.

Unfortunatly for any tourist here at the moment the weather is garbage right now raining

As someone interested in the sandbox for late next month, is the rainy weather for all day? Or is it like Bangkok's rainy season where it rains for a couple of hours a day, then sunshine for the rest?

I wouldn't like to be here as a tourist at the moment cant even go sit in a bar

Ha-ha . . . rainy season rain comes and goes just whenever and for as long as it wants! And what a wet note for your debut post, but thanks for that!

Its great for those of us who are residents thou.  The air is relatively cool and not hot.  No crowds. Light traffic. Amazing prices.

While I live in Panwa area, last weekend my wife and I rented a hotel room in Karon for the weekend so to give the area some business.  It was a superb deal for price ... During the day, when not raining, we went down to Kata beach, which was excellent.

As for being residents, we have been having contractors come in/out of our place in Phuket, doing various construction improvements/repairs.  Prior to COVID, it was very difficult to find a quality contractor (at a good price) who wasn't overly busy ... but now, its relatively easy to find a contractor and it is a great opportunity / time to have work done on one's place of living.

I do thou still feel sad for the locals, who are suffering.
