I remember about 10 years ago going to Khao Yai national park with my then girlfriend, we encountered an elephant at a salt lick not far from the side of the road. We stopped the car to observe and take some photos, the elephant ignored us for several minutes and then slowly began to approach us, I told my girlfriend to get back in the car as it was time to move. She answered ‘it’s just an elephant no need to worry’ I then yelled at her ‘get in the car now’ the elephant was heading straight for her luckily she heard the concern in my voice and moved. We jumped into the car and took off. The elephant continued to follow but gave up shortly after, they are magnificent animals but in the wild they can be unpredictable and dangerous but people often see them as harmless especially after seeing them in ‘sanctuaries’ or working in the countryside.
