Talk Forum - Protester injured and loses sight in one eye, family plans legal action

Recommended Posts

A 29 year old protester injured in a Bangkok rally last week has lost sight in one eye. Tanat Thanakitamnuay’s family says his right eye was hit by a “blunt cylindrical object” – which Coconuts Bangkok says was a tear gas canister – tearing the cornea, rupturing the eyeball, and causing his retina to peel off. Several protesters have been injured after clashes with police over the past week. A 15 year old (thought to be around 20 years old before he was identified) is in a coma after he was shot in the neck at Monday’s protest in Bangkok’s Din […]

I don't see him winning here.  Not in this country, in this legal climate.

They'll just say he was part of an illegal gathering and he shouldn't have been there, so the police can't be held responsible.

Pity about losing his eye.

He'll probably get further than most, as the family's pretty wealthy and well connected.

The selfish idiot has to take responsibility for his stupidity at being involved in an illegal gathering that is fuelling the number of infections and fatalities.  He showed a "one-eyed" perspective in choosing to go there, so all-all a pretty good result so far.  Now the Police will file criminal charges and he can do a runner, like several other high profile rich-listers afraid of taking responsibility for themselves.

So glad you support the junta and everything they stand for.

No.  But I do support those who actually understand the risks of public gatherings.  Anyone who does not is a selfish idiot.

What....losing an eye, is a "good result"?

FFS...!!

He went there knowing it could happen.  If he did not know this I suspect he does not have any respect for the daily risks.  So yes!  Perhaps a better word would have been "justified" or "apt" or "anticipated".

weren't there risks of being sprayed with chemicals, being stampede, shots flying, etc.... when you attempt to join this kind of activity no matter how peaceful they pitch to be. It's not a stroll in the park. Get real

I think a big part of the protest is the you know who dropping the ball and now everyone is at great risk and the people wanting them out. This virus is not going to end anytime soon. So what do you want them to do, roll over and kowtow to the people they they despise and who put this country into the mess it is at? From my end all I see are the good Thai people fully in support to get them out. These protests are not the real cause of the virus spreading, it already is doing that well ok on its own.

So you support the premise that the Thai Government  dropped the ball regarding the spead of the virus. Have a look at these stats.....Covid Update AUG 22 2021.pdf

Pandemics are a part of life, just as is wildfire, floods, earthquakes.  All a Government can do.  All a Government is required to do is to keep their populations safe.   No-one can control a pandemic.  It's all abour risk assessment and behaving appropriately with speed.  The three countries that are standout at minimising fatalities are South Korea, New Zealand and you see the PDF?  Yes, Thailand.  But I agree with you that it's not over yet.  Not even next year despite what is required of international GDP indices, private commercial industries, bar-owners "et al", want.  We are not driving a cure.  There is none.  The virus itself is in the drivers seat and going full-noise while virulent starins are still cooking in our blood streams.

Um, where have you been? I am just going to overlook you said that and the other comment about the kid and the protestors. In the end they will say it wasn't a tear gas canister or anything related to them, and the kid will be seriously charged and potentially sued.

There seems a lot is seriously off base in the OP's mode of thinking. Not going to go any more into it.

Unfortunate he lost an eye but that’s one of the risks when rioting.
Once the police shoot tear gas, shoot rubber bullets and tell you to leave the area  If you choose to stay and riot it’s on you if you get hurt.

I have been coming to Thailand since 1970.  I can state categorically it IS NOT in a mess.  Saying so does not make it so.  And a small percentage of the population protesting (particularly staudents) do not represent the general population at all.   Students are known everywhere to always be demanding change in their status because they are at university they are tyherefore really clever and assume they can think what is best for the general public who are not as politically aware.  And the reason they appear as such to students, is because they are too busy putting food on the table - whilst the students' food is supplied as of right?

There are two separate matters here.

Physical damage and taking part in an illegal gathering.

They don't cancel each other out, nor does one invalidate the other.

There can be two legal cases. Then both will have their own outcome.

Even in Thailand.

But I wouldn't hold my breath until  final judgement.

There are lots of people that live in Thailand all their lives. And they can often have completely opposing views.

That you live here 50 years is no reason why you should know the state of affairs.

As you said "Saying so does not make it so".

That goes for you too.

And do you have a Thai wife and kids here too in today's Thailand? You say been coming, so are you living in Thailand now? The general attitude from every Thai I hear from is get the bums out. Well we actually do have an aunt who idolizes them and the monarchy. But we are not going to go there and none of us talk to her.
