News Forum - Pheu Thai proposes bill to limit Thai military’s power
Very many in the General Population in rural Thailand doesn't care one jot what happens in political circles in Bangkok. They just want to be left alone to get on with their lives and would like better health care and a better social safety net, such as a viable pension scheme. Beyond that, they don't care . -

Probably not. This is the answer I keep coming back to when I’m asked, would much change here for the average punter if Thailand had a western style democracy? I’m not even sure there’s a groundswell of one in the current political climate. The sidestepping of the move forward party in 2023 elections barely registered a blip on the radar as far the general public were concerned. Besides, Thailand has more pressing issues as far as human rights are concerned, such as the weaponisation of defamation laws to attempt to silence whistleblowers where corruption is rampant. Holding public officials to account sans the threat of lawfare should be a priority for pro-democracy cheerleaders. -

And neither should they give up any influence, or perceived power. The Thai Military have saved this Country from certain 'regimes' 11 times in the past 90 odd years and were fundamental in the establishment of modern Siam/ Thailand, Few can convincingly argue against the fact that the last time the military ran the country, under General Prayut Chan- 0- Cha, it was a time of stability, economic growth and high infrastructure investment. They also handled the Covid pandemic with sensible and pragmatic polices, that helped the population (and the expat community) and preserved economic growth, in a way that puts Western countries to shame.
