I started that. Sorry. I was very annoyed. Moving on, 6 dead and 6 still in hospital. Not good for anyone.

So woke liberal thinking is “Don’t kick a man when he is down”. OK. You do you and I’ll do me. All good.

No, we cannot agree on that broad generalization on this particular case. It was a tragic accident. Accident.

No - woke liberal thinking is all about self-congratulation with a social justice warrior mentality.

It was not an accident - they did not go too fast on a bike and get killed. They drank (insert how many) free shots in a Laos bar in the middle of nowhere. Stupid mistake is what it was. Tragic yes - but not an accident.

Yep it was dumb. Sad but stupid. Drinking your mate's whisky is one thing. Trusting some random in the 3rd world is dumb.

You are speaking about yourself Marc - woke liberal Expats with a Nanny State mentality are what sucks here.  I recall seeing a Youtube video many years ago about the types of Expats to avoid.  1 was the obvious sexpat, 2 was the naive fools with rose glasses about to be conned by a bar girl, 3 was the Expats living in a village that have gone 'feral' and think they are a Thai and believe they understand Thai logic and reasoning. Number 4, and to be avoided at all costs, was the social justice warriors who think if Thailand would just adopt their own liberal mentality, then everything would change and be much better.  IMO you seem to be a 3 and 4 combination.

Me thinks a little TDS is still lingering - maybe take advice of Rob Reiner and a few other arty farty types and take a break for a while. We aint that bad - we just do not think like a nanny state member anymore, and we (dare I say, like Thais) have accepted that our lives are our responsibility. These young people made stupid mistakes and tragically lost their lives - at best they can be a lesson for others on what not to do when in a 3rd world country.

I'll weigh in on the subject (having been involved in the Thai tourism business for almost 40 years). I would say this kind of issue stems from two main issues. Firstly you have the perpetrator who may have caused this tragedy through carelessness or maliciousness. Most likely the former as not even the greediest of entrepreneurs would want to kill off their clients. Backpacker tourism has followed other forms of tourism wherein the clients have become a number and everything is about numbers and driving up profit. There is very little or in fact no relationship at all between the visitors and the local population.
Secondly you have a large sector of the backpacker crowd that seems to think that experiencing other parts of the world involves hanging out in groups and disengaging from their surroundings. The only "local" people that they engage with will be encouraging their behaviour as it is what makes them money, pub crawls, large group tours etc. Anything that keeps them in a group and promotes group spending. It is basically a recipe for disaster when the wrong people get involved.

It happened before and will happen again. Stupid people are born daily. Look at the yearly drownings.

Well said - when the greedy meet the ignorant - bad things can and do happen sometimes.
