Hard to find in the south but maybe changed. 7/11 stocks more beer now. 20 years ago they have like 5 choices only.

Yeah I've seen it in 7.

"they had visited Jaidee’s Bar later in the evening, a venue known for offering free local whiskey shots and openly selling illicit drugs like opium,"

Begs the question if it was KNOWN for 'openly selling illicit drugs like opium' why was it allowed to trade? Are the Laos cops like the Royal Thai Police supplementing their incomes by turning a blind eye or is it sheer laziness and incompetence? Questions need to be asked of those responsible for policing methinks!

How is it bad luck?

Out of the m millions of people currently on vacation around the globe, they alone were fatally poisoned in a commercial establishment. I would call that rotten bad luck.

99.99% of people don't drink homemade free shots in dodgy bars. Not really bad luck. Like crossing the road without looking. Whilst sad these people are idiots.

You don’t know any of that for a fact and are jumping at the opportunity to shit on dead people. Nice.

Because of the deaths that will happen and they will be investigated. It happens everywhere in SEAsia - except maybe Malaysia and Indonesia as much. Young people come here because they know it is easy going and fun - drugs freely available and they rarely punish the users - usually only the dealers and suppliers.

What is it with woke liberals and their pathological desire to take the side of the offended and the wronged. I guarantee that 99+% of Thais see it as their fault - they made a bad decision and they were unlucky - it was up to them. Thais dont want a Nanny and/or Mother always trying to save their lives from any perceived dangers - they are taught that their life is their responsibility and no one else's. That is one reason why you are not allowed to criticise people here - people's lives belong to them - not to the Nanny State - they are accountable only to themselves and Buddha.   You live in Thailand (maybe?), and I think you should adopt more of their 'live and let live' culture, and shed that woke nanny state control BS.  We are not putting shit on dead people - we are criticising their decisions and the bar owner/s. But as per my last post - young people often come here to have fun and they dont think enough sometimes.  The nanny state will never 'save' them all - they came here to get away from the nanny state controls - their lives = their decisions. Sad and unfortunate, but it was their fault - they made their own decisions.
