The wonder is that this doesn't happen several times, every day, maybe it does. Electrical installations of all kinds here are potential death traps. 

Particularly given nothing is earthed. Well, not in my condo anyway. So I’m assuming many other places aren’t earthed either. A local girl I know lost her father to an electrical mishap.

Sadly electricians occasionally get electrocuted in every country in the world usually by not bothering to isolate the equipment they are working on. I know many electricians in the UK and without exception all of them have had a 'belt' or two in their careers, unfortunately the state of many electrical installations in Thailand leave a lot to be desired which makes it more common here.
