On the one hand creating the world's tallest statue -- of a pagan goddess -- in the middle of a Muslim area seems like a stupid, disrespectful, and provocative thing to do.

On the other, it would be nice if Muslims didn't respond to everything with violence.

First off...  Guan Yin is a Buddhist statue embodying mercy... not a pagan statue at all unless you are of the ignorant variety.

Secondly... thee muslims migrated into this area yet refuse to assimilate... much like they do and have done throughout the world... so in reality it is a Buddhist area being invaded by muslims... not a muslim area as you stated.

Well they are known for terrorism. Buddhism is 1100 years older too.

That's how THEY view it.  That's the point.  The entire area has a significant Muslim population and as you surely know, it is specifically where Muslim militants have been waging a low-level insurgency for decades to try and create a new state out of Thai and Malaysian land.  So my point stands; while I wish Muslims weren't so stabby this is a foolish statue to build.

This is an issue all over the world. Capitulating to a group of people, be them of a religious persuasion or cultural, is fraught with danger. Once you allow this it becomes the accepted status quo.

Look at many cities in Europe where there are now Muslim enclaves that pretty much run by their own rules and the rest of the population is encouraged to stay away.

If people want to emigrate into an area that is predominantly of a different religious persuasion, either learn to live with it or go somewhere better suited to your religious or cultural beliefs.

To tell people that they shouldn't build a statue celebrating Buddhism in a Buddhist area is enabling others  to enforce their beliefs on others.

This has been going on for thousands of years by many different religions, but that doesn't make it right.

The Europe issue is terrible, and I think Europe will be lost forever in a generation or two.  Muslims have been in Thailand, the region and the Malay peninsula for centuries -- they are not recent arrivals.  Anyway, whatever!  Just one more thing to fight and kill over, I guess.
