Hua Hin, the resort town on the Gulf of Thailand, has begun its annual macaque sterilisation programme. The programme is designed to cut down on the number of primates that bother residents and visitors. The sterilisation programme started back in 2017 by way of a memorandum of cooperation between the municipality and the Conservation Administration Office 3 of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, says Hua Hin Municipality mayor Nopporn Wuthikul. The sterilisation programme has 1.1 million baht in funding. The goal is to sterilise 600 of the estimated 3,000 macaques or 20% of them. According to […]

I drove past the monkey mafia in Hua Hin one day and I saw one of the buggers hightailing it out of a shop with a big bag of candy he had just stolen. They sometimes wander into our neighborhood. We had one sitting on our balcony one day for a while.

Should extend the sterilisation program to certain HH and BKK residents also. 😉 😉 😉

I certainly hope you are not referring to my bestest buddy on HH, NCC.

Bit late in his case, hes getting past it anyway.🤪

An interesting post, but happily it does appear that the macaques are only being sterilised and not culled. And your debut post, too . . . thanks for that!

I wonder whether the macaques get Covid?

Give them the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA jab, the spike-protein will accumulate in the female's ovaries and the male's testes, leading to infertility within 1 to 3 years and voila: problem solved...

I've been told a few times that the slaughter of animals bred for eating is generally carried out by members of the minority groups such as muslims and christians.

Seeing as the animal is now dead it would be wasteful not to eat it and your buhddist concience is thus clean.

I had to go mano a mano with one up in Khao Yai NP. It feinted left like it was going for another table then jinked back to the right. I saved most of our lunch but it did make off with a bag of sticky rice (and was chased into the jungle by a pursuing horde looking to make the khao nieow their own). MF'ers are quick.

I remember the macaques when I visited a temple on a hilltop in Hua Hin. They were everywhere and running amok in gangs. There were signs everywhere telling people not to feed them, or they would attack you and scratch and bite you. I think measures that control the population without culling serves everyone (including the macaques).

I wouldn’t advocate shooting as it’s a cruel way to control numbers. They clearly need controlling as they become like vermin when numbers are high.

Several years ago I was staying in a hotel and stood on the balcony enjoying the sunset. When I went back in to the room there was a large macaque with an infant sitting on the table helping themselves to my fruit. As I moved towards it, the monkey made a sound which needed no translation. It essentially meant “Keep back mother fuc*er or I swear I will rip your face off”. I moved to one side of the room. The monkey took as much as it could carry along with its infant and left. It was at that stage I realised the similarity between a pissed off macaque and a bar girl you refuse to buy a beer for! 😉
