If there was no such thing as a visa system. And everyone on the planet could live wherever they wanted, where would everyone choose to live? Because, let’s face it, an immigration policy is a loser as far as the general public is concerned, this seems to be universally accepted.

I would live exactly where I live now, in Eastern Thailand.  Why would I want to be anywhere else? Very many people in the West dream there whole lives about affording a short holiday here.  Some make it here, most don't. I live here.

So you are OK with billions of people from 3rd world countries all descending on first world countries of their choice? How would that help those who stayed bahind, and what impact would it have on the new countries??

Do you realise that the 'benefits' for those people who are lucky enough to be born in 1st word countries, were utterly and solely because of their ancestors - and in many cases those benefits were hard won at the costs of many people's live?  It is not a racial issue - it is about what people did for their kids and their kids and their kids. Dumping 500 million people into USA would destroy all those hard won benefits with a few years - surely you understand that? Protecting one's country from those who would come and exploit it and its benefits is 'universally accepted' - not the lunacy you propose.  How old are you??

I guess if I lived here for several decades, have families and all the Thai ID etc., then I too would consider myself a 'local' and want citizenship.

One thing that always confuses me about Thailand.  The media often says 'immigrants' - but as far as I am aware there are no Immigrants in Thailand.  Thailand only has non-immigrant Visas in the forms of :-

Transit, Tourist, Non-Immigrant, Diplomatic, Official and Courtesy.

In other words, Thailand does not allow Immigrants to enter Thailand. Am I wrong?

I'll never knock Thailand's Immigration system they manage it miles better than my native UK (and most of Europe).

Well said and very true.  The UK could learn a lot from Thailand, but they would be too arrogant to acknowledge that.

Without the commensurate infrastructure and social services it’s unlikely they, or for that matter, those already there, hang around for long before trying somewhere else.

Shameful wasn’t it.

Big assumption they want to go to the U.S. they may wish to come to Thailand. What hard won benefits are you referring to? The same hard won benefits that you left behind when you moved to Thailand?

As an Australian you can do better than that. Australia’s immigration program has been a resounding success. Contrary to negative light in which you want to portray migrants, the vast majority are motivated and industrious and not dole bludgers.

How is that relevant to the discussion?
