OR... maybe the dumbing down of drug users... begs the question... if there were no drug laws would everyone use drugs

More people would experiment but not everyone would adopt the habit and most people phase out drug use as they mature. The criminalization of drugs forces them  underground meaning only the worst failures surface while education for the responsible use of drugs is suppressed. It’s difficult to have an open conversation or seek help regarding an illegal/taboo subject. Decriminalising some drugs, not all, offers more pros than cons to society as a whole. As an example, the vast majority of Thailand’s inmates are low level drug offenders serving onerous sentences. They’d be far more useful as productive tax paying members of society, not locked in a cage before release only to commit the same crimes again.

That’s what drug rehab and social rehabilitation before re-entry into society is supposed to be all about. I’m not holding my breath for Thailand to adequately address those prerequisites for reducing recidivism.

I live in a city where those policies have been an abject failure for decades

 

Going as far as decriminalizing hard drugs and offering a "safe supply" that has been such an unmitigated disaster that the party that introduced those insane laws that made us all less safe, that they have walked those ridiculous laws back in a little more than a year 

 

 

At some point you have to care for non-addicts as well

And in any place with lax drug laws and enforcement, it puts non-addict residents in harm and danger

Can't dispute that most drug users are dumb, however harsher penalties for drug offences would deter some and would allow for the removal off the streets for those that persisted.

Agree 100%

 

Hard drug users don't respond to being coddled 

 

They will take advantage of that every single time

 

And as I mentioned above

At some point the government has to care about non-addicts over addicts 

 

Our safety has to take precedence over someone who deicided they want to shoot meth all day

Or anywhere else in the world... when it gets to the point that criminals of any variety are treated better than the rest of the people there is 100% recidivism... that's where we are now.

That has never been proven... for whatever reason harsher penalties haven't slowed down drug use period
