Here in Japan, there is a rice shortage at the moment and even with the 500%+ import tariff, foreign rice is often a cheaper, more practical option.

Interesting that Thai rice is often seen by consumers as the only acceptable alternative to home-grown rice, the other major sources being USA, China, India and Australia.

Japanese only ever eat rice from those other countries when they don’t realise that’s where it’s from (chain restaurants etc).

Good quality or good marketing, no idea. But in the pickiest rice market in the world, Thailand is doing well.

Yes, Thailand has done well in marketing its premium rice for the export market. I was convinced the decision by the current government to release the warehoused rice, from the Yingluck era, into the consumer market would taint its overall reputation in the global market. However, there doesn’t seem to be any evidence of that.
