Well....Since when the instant noodle become a healthier diet? The noodle itself is not healthy with all the prervative and chemical ingredients added in. The reason many are going for it is because the fact that it is cheaper and offordable for those woking class as  may can't go to fast food restaurants which infact is more unhealthy food when compared to instant noodles.

Look around at the Thailand I knew over 20 years ago, no obesity then and good cheap street food available on every street. Look around now, obesity is fast becoming a growing trend and younger people are the prime sufferers good cheap street food though still available has often been sanitised and moved away from the 'main drags' and instead fast food burgers/pizza/fried chicken is available everywhere.

I pretty much agree with you on this Chris.

When I first arrived here, it was uncommon to see a weight challenged person. Now they are everywhere. And most concerning is the abundance of tubbies in the schools.

I think one of the biggest culprits is the big sugary coffee drinks (or basically shakes)

Take a walk in any business district in the morning and everyone is walking around with basically a hot fudge sunday in a cup!

Plenty of chubbies around 20, even 30 years ago, but a lot more now. Unfortunately we are genetically programmed to crave exactly what western fast foods and processed foods provide way too much of, it is a hard habit to kick.

The amount of sugar in just about any food or drink is diabolical.  And then you get these big corporations coming out with 'sugar free' products.

Yeah Right, only to be substituted with other nasties like aspartame.

I don't mind a little sugar but sometimes I may have a drink that for me is way over the top on sweetness.  Normally I ask the other half if she wants it as I cannot drink it.

All part and parcel of these corporations trying to get people addicted to their products thus increasing revenue.  Do they get stung for causing all these medical follow on problems?  Very rarely.

Same goes for fast food.

Too true. I went on a carnivore diet - meat, eggs, coffee & water. Absolutely no joy in that lot but I could eat all I wanted, whenever I wanted so never hungry. Dropped pounds like Pablo Escobar in his heyday and noticed that there was very little I could/wanted to eat at the supermarket. Then I learnt the food pyramid was a big scam and decided to stopped learning any more.

The flip side to all of this is exercise. Thai people have also invested in exercise in a big way. When I first came to Chiang Mai about 10 years ago barely anyone cycled up to Doi Suthep. These days it’s like Piccadilly Circus, with the amount of cyclists and runners going up, weekends are particularly crazy.

Fun runs too, have taken off in a big way and sporting apparel stores such as Decathlon are the most popular places in town. School sports programs have taken on a life of their own and the local athletics track is often booked out for inter school competition. All this is encouraging news. The best antidote to sugar is exercise.
