Bang Kapi is really moving ahead. I took a water taxi there from Nana Chard a couple of weeks ago and was impressed. 30 minutes by by boat / 20 baht or less. Huge mall right by the pier, accessible with the MRT and now they're completing the Sky Walk, the place is booming.

Very few visitors / expats, seems like a very Thai area. In any event, a great step forward in decentralisation.

A bit off topic but one thing I noticed in the mall at Bang Kapi. 49 restaurants in the food court and 22 of them were Japanese-themed. What's with the obsession with Japanese food? 😂

Our house is near Central Westgate, a massive mall

The whole top floor is restaurants of every Asian ethnicity

Oh and they aren't cheap and they are packed every day all day

I don't eat Japanese in Thailand simply because we have amazing Japanese outside our door in Vancouver

Actually sushi is always the 1st thing I eat when I get back home after traveling

I arrived in Japan two days ago and sushi is the first thing I ate, too 🤣

... but same here, I'd never eat overpriced Japanese food in Thailand

I guess the Japanese preference goes back to WW2. When Thailand was occupied by Japanese forces. And the Japanese, being Japanese, rather than adapt to the local cuisine, had the locals learn how to cook Japanese cuisine. Also given Japanese food is a lot more expensive than local Thai food, maybe the profit margins are greater than at your local Thai restaurant?

On that, I’m a bit surprised that the Thais haven’t embraced the cooking of western food to the same degree. At least where I am, there’s an opportunity for a few more decent pizza/pasta restaurants and bakeries/deli’s. The locals seem to be dragging their heels.

River taxis are on of the best kept secrets of BKK. My wife and I were based in Town in Town a while back and we often took the boat into central BKK. Cheap and quicker than navigating the roads. You just need to remind yourself to brace for the back wash from the boats heading in the opposite direction.

We have a house in Nonthaburi

My wife likes to just stay in her house and her plants most of the time when we get back to Thailand

I like to roam around

I/we often stay by the river

I take the River boats to/from Nonthaburi

Takes 30mins or so

My wife refuses and will have her brother drive her and take well over an hour most times

I am a pretyy decent cook

But especially casual stuff like my shrimp tacos and other things

My stepson is living with us in Canada before he goes back for his Masters next year

And says he wants to open a small restaurant that serves all the casual stuff I make

He thinks University students would love it
