Nasty stuff, commonly known as caustic soda or lye.  Even the vapours can lead to chemical burns of the esophagus and lungs. 

Would not be a nice way to die, very painful. 

Condolences to their relatives. Mother was about the retire and 2 lovely daughters whose lives were cut short way too early.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Why 3 people? Why use so much of that stuff, in such a confined area and not realise and get away, quick. Yes it is nasty stuff, but it's not as if it would incapacitate you in seconds, it wouldn't and not 3 people at one time.  This is a very odd story.
