This is probably a stupid question, but can I connect my small laptop to a standard TV and use the TV as my screen?

Depends on the age, make and model of the laptop and TV. Very few laptops do not have some kind of connection for an external monitor, even many tablets and phones can be connected, and most TV's can be used as monitors with varying degrees of success. The easiest, and most common, way is to use HDMI, but if you can do it and what cable you need would depend on the laptop.

Name of the model and or the model number?

eg: Envy, Pavillon, Chromebook. Could be printed near the keyboard. That’ll help identify the ports available so what cable can be used.

TV has wifi? If so, maybe no cables needed.
