I'm surprised by the amount of handguns being used in this country. But I suppose they are everywhere nowadays.

I remember when living in the Philippines that handguns were so easy to get.  A story went that when the Americans were based there,  handguns were rife.

In order to get some control the American authorities decided to buy manufacturing licences back from the local gunsmiths to decrease the amount of guns being made.

Naturally the gunsmiths were more than happy for this payout.  Documents were signed with the gunsmiths acknowledgement that they could  no longer make any firearms.  Bank accounts were healthy once more.

Roll on a few months, many San Miguel and Tanduay were drunk.  Bank balances shrunk.  Oh what to do?  Let's make some guns... and so they did, and probably still do.

The Philippine gunsmiths are very good at their trade.  I was always aware whenever I went out that anyone could be packing heat.

Many a time I would see the unmistakable bulge of a concealed handgun tucked into their trousers.  Although I never got into trouble in my time in the Phils, I tended to tread lightly when visiting any bar.

Had a great time even with that silent threat lurking in the background.
