Sorry, but what's 'tragic' about this?  It was near suicide and stupidly irresponsible, foreseeable is the right word, 'tragic' is not.

In NZ, additional courses about bike handling delve in accident causes and effects.

.

These courses are backed/sponsored by the Accident Compensation Corporation (Govt organisation). It's not just about road rules but also covers defensive driving.

.

Possibly the biggest point raised is that although you may follow the rules to the letter, others may not.  If you ride a bike then you are at a far greater risk than motor vehicle drivers.

.

Never try and get even or show the other guy a lesson (Road rage) when on a bike.  The risk is too high.  On a bike you have no protection, there is no safety cage around you.

.

If you need to give way (to avoid a crash) even if you are in the right... do so.  Sure you may be angry/frustrated/pissed off... But you are still alive.

.

I'm sure if they adopted a few graphic photographs of accidents involving bikes (including explanation of cause and effect) into the licence training here, then it may deter some from running red lights.

.

This accident was pure stupidity. Like Russian roulette,  your gambling with your life.

Another deterrent is in the form of police proactively enforcing road rules. .. but I won't hold my breath on that one.

I love bikes, but I'm also aware of the risks associated in riding them. Especially in Thailand.   Be safe out there riders.... Shiny side up!

Just make it simple....keep your distance when you are on a motorcycle with proper riding gears

Red lights are optional in Thailand, especially on a motorcycle.  One should be a little more careful when ignoring them.  It's every bit as dangerous if you do stop at a red light on a bike...you are likely to be rear ended and turned into road kill.

I agree 100%... I nearly got taken out in Chiang Mai while waiting at a red light.

However I always check my mirrors even when waiting and spotted the speeding idiot then heard him lock up all four wheels.

Threw the bike into gear, checked the intersection, and got out of the way pretty dam quickly.

If I'd stayed where I was, the 4x4 would have been on top of me.

The rule is, if you are in a car, at the front, waiting for the lights to turn from red,  and the lights change to green, let the motorbikes go first, wait a couple of seconds, check right and left, then cross the junction. Patience is all here .  Of course, there will always be an idiot behind you, as you found out.

+1
The key to surviving Thai roads on 2 wheels. Always figure out your escape route when stopped at red lights, and check the mirrors at all times.

Yes, it's a habit, like everything else. When people behave like idiots or put me in danger, I don't even look at them.

A good friend of mine was stabbed to death in a road rage incident twenty years ago. His three kids are spending their whole lives without a dad, because of a middle finger raised. I still think of him often, and the sheer absurdity of it.
