Q3 tourism hopes fade as US advises citizens not to travel to Thailand

Recommended Posts

Hopes are fading for a tourism revival in the third quarter of this year after the US government cautioned its citizens against unnecessary travel to Thailand. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has added Thailand to its Level 4 countries, the highest-level warning, as a result of the rising Covid-19 infections in the Kingdom. The Bangkok Post reports that the development has all but dashed hopes of a tourism revival this quarter, with operators now pinning their expectations on the last quarter of the year. However, Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn from the Association of Thai Travel Agents points out that, even […]

Do Americans even vacation in Thailand en masse? There are no direct flights to Thailand from the US not to mention flights are kinda expensive coupled with either job losses or high debt.

Not to mention there are cheaper alternatives such as the Caribbean, Hawaii and the Philippines

I just don’t think Thailand is high on a vacation list for a lot of Americans. So that CDC warning is moot to begin with

Americans were the 8th or 9th largest group by nationally in 2019. Not bad for a country a minimum of 18 hours by plane. They were also one of the highest spenders per trip, and the largest nationally to the Phuket sandbox. That said, the 3rd quarter is going to suck for reasons other than the CDC warning.

I agree, with a big rise in cases again in the USA, there are too many pretrip expenses one has to go through as well all the dark red provinces that restrict movement in Thailand as well as Thailand's high infection rate of the Delta Variant.

You can be fully vaccinated and still get infected in Thailand.

I was thinking the same - isn't it a hideous 24 hours(ish) of flying to get to Thailand ffrom the US - stuff that, I wouldn't even consider it when you've got Hawaii on your doorstep !

Most of the travelers to the Phuket Sandbox were not from the USA

I think I read on here, around 1800 of the 14000 were American tourists /returnees.. not exactly a massive amount of numbers but now the hopes are dashed of losing that number!

Thats not what I claimed, it was they were the largest group by nationally. Per yesterday’s Thaigar article: “According to a report in TTR Weekly, 14,077 foreign tourists arrived in Phuket during the month of July, with most of them (1,802) coming from the US. This trend may well change following the latest US government warning against travel to Thailand. Phuket also welcomed 1,558 UK visitors, 1,455 Israelis, 847 German arrivals, and 839 from France.”

people in the world, are allowed to travel,
according to, article 1, civil rights, ohchr,
what is the highest right per country,
and almost nobody of billions of people, want to forbid to travel.
who make so called laws, now and before, is not elected by majority of millions of citizens.
-
i now, reality is, most people are too scared, to decide for itself,
and who makes decision, not care about article 1,
so relatively few people, still easily keep going. bless the education system. ;)

Hawaii is great to a point for boy and girlfriend, lovers and family vacations. But it is still a US territory and rather expensive. Still lots of fun, but if you consider 2 weeks in the Hawaiian islands or 2 weeks in Thailand then the cost is significantly way lower for Thailand. If you add in leaving your home going to the airport, check in and wait and fly time and transfer flights, it is definitely over 24 hours just from the USA West coast.

No the hopes were dashed when Thailand put on such severe restrictions to enter Thailand.  If I was considering Thailand and I knew that I had to first be fully vaccinated, yet I have to pay for a Covid test to get a fit to fly, then upon arrival spend 15 days in quarantine, be tested 3 times during that period, and then upon departure get tested again, I would definitely say, not worth the cost or effort.  The fact that the U.S. government warned against travel would be the least of the reasons I would not come.

Agreed, Thailand is much more of a European vacation destination.  I can't understand why the USA's warning for Americans has anything to do with the Europeans, unless TAT feels that people pay attention to the US's CDC warnings.

Regardless of where tourists may come from, the ridiculous hoops that they have to jump through and then perhaps lose their vacation because someone on their plane tested positive are sufficient reasons to choose a better destination.

Ah, those hoops. How I've missed them since I came over from TV. Like brown envelopes. Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.........

Too be frank, Indeed Europeans where coming but now they have a escape goat even through it gave them vaccines. Blame everyone except yourself... Just another day in Thailand.

However with the THB starting to crumble perhaps tourism will pick up by end of next year.

My wife and I have been planning and pushing back our next trip since March 2020, and were scheduled to use the Sandbox to arrive in October, but we're moving the trip again to April 2022. We're both vaccinated and we're not really worried about the "cases" in Thailand, but we're concerned about concerning others around us - we don't want to travel as the scary enemies putting everyone at risk, or at least the perception of that. And as many, many others have said - everything is closed, and we're avid consumers of wine and/or beer with our food, two major factors which we know will affect the outcome of spending thousands of dollars, flying nearly 28 hours, having devices shoved up our nostrils, and potentially risking it all to be forced into ASQ if someone near us tests positive.

The juice isn't worth the squeeze.
