Johnson has been charged under Section 290 of the Criminal Law: committing a fatal attack, which carries a penalty of three to 15 years’ imprisonment.

This must be a manslaughter charge?

A moment of drunken madness by the American bloke and his life has been changed forever imagine what's going through his head in the Police Cell  as the alcohol wears off and the hangover and realisation kicks in.

RIP to the Aussie Liam at 35 taken to young.

Rule no. 1, never go into confrontation with anyone.

As a former Muay Thai athlete with 25+ bouts, I'm absolutely confident that it doesn't matter at all that I know how to fight since there's a good chance outside of the ring that my would-be opponent has a weapon of some sort.

People ask me from time to time what to do in a street fight or road rage situation and I always say the same thing: a fight you've avoided or escaped is a fight you've won.

He carries a weapon at a bar not a diving boat.  A moment of madness is not good excuse. Sure he could agrue self defense after the fact. Normal people don't carry huge knifes around looking for trouble

I praticed karate for several years and that was what my teacher (a 5th degree black belt) would always say.

The circumstances that led up to the altercation are not stated. The deceased may or may not have presented a threat. Despite that, the killer looks like a real piece of work and it will be interesting to know of his history of brawls and run ins with the law. Being drunk isn't a good enough excuse for killing someone.

Yes it is wise to avoid fights in bars, but in Thailand, it is best to avoid the bars which attract the people most likely to get into fights, and best not to engage with people who give off the vibe of  being trouble, even if friendly. If you wouldn't befriend or talk to the person at home, don't do it in Thailand.

Says something about the American that he was carrying a knife like that in the bar in the first place. The sentence it seems is between 3 and 15 years (manslaughter I guess). I sincerely hope he does the 15 and ALL of it in a Thai prison!

Not always possible, I was sitting in a quiet beer bar in Patpong 2 where I was well known. I was the only customer and there was only the cashier on duty. In walks a German man about 40 years old with 2 German ladies he was obviously wanting to impress walks up to me and orders me to leave the bar so they could have the place to themselves. Before I could even process what he was saying he started swinging. Lucky for me he was like most bullys not really a fighter and 2 punches had him on his back, bar staff from 2 bars nearby then came and stood with me and the cashier as his 2 ladies dragged him away cursing the "violent English pig".
