Super Spreaders?

Quite awhile back in one of the other topics I wondered if in fact the

vaccinated would become the super spreaders since they were being detected as positive +

had lesser symptoms thus making it easier for them to carry & spread it.

Because unvaccinated had stronger symptoms & usually self isolated at that point but the vaccinated had barely any so continued out & about at work & play spreading both Alpha & Delta

Seems the Thai PBS article agrees

The brightest minds in the United States and England are fearing that the world is facing a really and progressively gloomy future, but they think slightly differently, though. The US group is cautioning that people vaccinated against the coronavirus are probably now dangerous carriers, while its English counterpart has gone one step further, warning of a strong possibility that a variant worse than Delta and with an ability to render current vaccines useless will almost certainly emerge.

This has been my concern for the past year. Statistics - just plain numbers - would indicate that if there is X chance for a mutation in every case and you have 200M confirmed cases, there's an excellent chance for new mutations to arise. We're also at the point where we have a very large vaccinated population and a very large unvaccinated population. The virus can freely mutate and spread in the un-vaxxed group (as we're seeing right now in the US) and test itself against the vaccinated group. Currently, the breakthrough number (in the US) is vanishingly small, like 0.08%, but recent research shows that when infected the vaccinated carriers have essentially the same viral load as the unvaccinated. So, there's a chance to spread a variant back from a vaccinated carrier to be further amplified and spread.

When a variant arises that is easily transmissible, ignores the vaccine, and is more infectious, we're screwed.

We are seeing some States with 75% of new infections being amongst the vaccinated so like your last sentence said we may be pooched ?

This is all public knowledge, have tried to explain it to educated Thais (teachers) just get blank looks and few comments.  Many think  that vaccination is "the be all end all" of Covid, some say "oh I've been vaccinated". Who can blame them when their leader says it will be over in 2-3 weeks.

So for a long term prognosis I must agree with JamesE, we're screwed.

The vaccinated becoming the actual super-spreaders.  Yes, it seems that is indeed what is happening right now in the high-vaxxed countries.  The consequences of immune escape, which is inevitable when mass-vaccinating in the midst of a pandemic, are explained in this article posted yesterday on the Controversial Covid Corner.  Doom and gloom are too rosy words to describe what that means...

Nah. I haven't seen that data anywhere. Where did you hear that?

If I recall correctly, wasn't this also reported by the CDC?

Yeah, but that's a single outbreak, not "some States". Yup. There's no doubt if you're stupid and vaccinated you can still get COVID.

Singapore is an outlier. Everybody there has been tested almost 3X. I don't doubt the numbers but the rest of the headline is "few fall ill". Also consider this from the article:

"Of Singapore's 1,096 locally transmitted infections in the last 28 days, 484, or about 44%, were in fully vaccinated people, while 30% were partially vaccinated and just over 25% were unvaccinated, Thursday's data showed."

It's only 74% if you count the partially vaccinated so it's not a valid assertion that 75% are vaxxed.

Do you think there's an intellect component to Covid?

"S'pelling " ?

Definitely. We know that COVID spreads very easily between people in large groups. Delta by maybe an order of magnitude easier. We also know (and as many like pointing out) that a vaccine does not confer as protective a shield against Delta as it does against the other variants. All of that was known pre-July 4th weekend. So, if you go out to Cape Cod with several thousand of your closest friends, party all weekend like you haven't partied in a year and a half, whether you're vaccinated or not, you have greatly increased your risk of getting the virus. Those party animals knew all that and went anyway. So, yeah, stupid and vaccinated is pretty much the summary.
