King Charles' divisive new royal portrait: Six details you might have missed in painting
17 May 2024

There is no royal insignia to be seen

Believe it or not, this is not a portrait of a King. To explain, this is the image of the patron of The Most Worshipful Company of Drapers, a guild which has medieval origins. It was commissioned to mark Charles’s association with the guild for over 50 years.

In the painting the monarch wears the red coat of the Welsh Guards, the regiment for which he was made regimental colonel in 1975. As a result, there are no royal insignia because this is not the image of a King.

Whatever anyone thinks of the portrait it's sure to be a conversation piece, given the rumours swirling around in some circles surrounding King Charles' supposed occult associations.  I'd have to agree that my first impression was he's surrounded by the fires of hell.  I'm a traditionalist and to me this portrait is absolutely hideous and in poor taste.

It didn't take long for people to play around with it, though.  Someone got the notion to invert and mirror it.  This is the result:

Placed alongside Marina Abramović's famed photo holding a ram's head then the resemblance in imagery is difficult to miss.

As I said, a conversation piece.

Now I don't pay too much mind to the many stories of certain people being involved in satanic rites.  Abramović is said to be the performance artist of choice for those celebrities and other high profile people who are believed by some to be involved in satanism.  Some of her works and performances are, to my mind, macabre and revolting.  Such as when she painted recipes on gallery walls using pig blood as part of her Spirit Cooking series.

Anyway, I expect people to have fun with this.  King Charles' portrait is not at all my cup of tea.
