This is a well known natural phenomenon that gives our hands and feet, when they are exposed to prolonged soaking, a texture like the rain treads on shoes and tyres. Formerly it was assumed that this trait evolved so our ancestors would have better grip whilst climbing in trees during the wet season. Later, it was realised that chimpanzees do not share this physiological effect, when their digits are submerged.

Why this trait had evolved remains a scientific mystery, and its one of the few arguments put forward by proponents of the aquatic are hypothesis, that mainstream anthropology finds it hard to explain. The problem is that the aquatic hypothesis contradicts not only mainstream opinion, but also the total of evidence.
