The Thai authorities have confirmed that Chinese investors were accountable for the trading of 13,832 tonnes of cadmium tailings in Thailand. Further cadmium waste has been uncovered in the provinces of Samut Sakhon and Chon Buri, with 5,358 tonnes of the chemical waste still unaccounted for. Why do Thai people act suicidal and poison the country and people just to make a buck? Cadmium is extremely toxic-both mutagenic and carcinogenic-and there is NO biological use of it. So why produce such a dangerous commercial byproduct with no actual plan for safe disposal? Just like the importation of plastic waste-it makes no sense. Is poisoning the community worth making a few baht?

It seems it was safely disposed of in a concrete pond as per regulations. Then someone dug it up to sell to the Chinese. Life is cheap in Asia.

Here's an idea, The beloved big brother, PRC, are happy, to trade cadmium waste for money, so why not just GIVE it to them. Instead of storing it in Thailand, how about delivering it, free of charge, over the border to them?

The Chinese have no regard for anyone other than themselves (and profit, of course), so they should be happy with that plan.

Also... "Liu Lu, a Chinese factory owner in Chon Buri"... Doesn't this come under the guise of 'employment'? Another case of little brown envelope to make regulations go away?

It is all to do with the almighty baht. If there is money to be made, to hell with the outcome.

This was the top news on Thai TV last night. The reason? Cadmium is highly toxic and a proven top carcinogenic. The CIB was present (Central Investigation Bureau), which means criminal charges may be filed.

But I wonder what they'll do with these "Chinese investors". After all, this may cause a certain loss of face for a certain part of the government.

Or maybe a loss of partial salary for some...

Thais tend to be short term gain over long term planning!
