I think it's good to go and experience these atrocities....

 

Makes you think of what the world is capable of

 

I did not feel good at all after seeing The Killing Fields in Cambodia

Or the War Museum in Saigon

 

But it gave me a better appreciation and it's humbling.....

They are not places you want to visit twice. I saw the Choeung Ek monument some 30 years ago, I don't know what it is like now, but then the setting made it ałl the more poingnant. Then it was just the monument and some of the partially excavated burial pits, approached down a dusty dirt track, and surrounded by a slice of rural South East Asia - Brahman cattle grazing in dried up rice paddies waiting for the rains to come, the smell of wood smoke from cooking fires

The heaviness of the place heightened all your senses.....

 

As you said, it's not pleasant but I think a necessary experience

As terrible as the history of Cambodia is, it is important to the people and the Nation that tourists go their and spend money exploring the country and many of it's wonderful places. I have been a few times and really loved the beauty and history of Angkor Wat, it was a two day event as the place is so big, you buy a 2 day pass so you can see it all and I highly recommend a Tour Guide to give you run down of how the place was built. I would also recommend the tour and viewing of the Killing Fields and S21 Camp, it's hard to watch, but vital to inform you of what really happened, and narrator was himself a survivor who tells of his account at the hands of the Khumer Rouge. The people are friendly and welcoming. Of course, be street aware as you would even in London etc. It's well worth the trip and cheap to stay and eat.
