Sure, it was a brake failure. That is always the number one reason for running red lights, in Thailand.

Nataya recounted that she saw the traffic signal turn amber and then red. However, her motorcycle’s brakes were not functioning correctly, which left her unable to stop in time. In a split-second decision, she proceeded through the red light just as Yothin, who had a green signal, was making a right turn onto Suan Somdet Road.

This resulted in Nataya’s motorcycle crashing into Yothin’s, causing both riders to be thrown from their bikes.

Something doesn't  make sense here....the traffic lights cannot change so fast. There is a cooling of period of few seconds. It is not the brake failure. This is a clear sign of breaking traffic light. She simply ride her motorcycle thinking the other person will stop. However the other person already have a green light for a U-turn who has the right of way to go.

It defies logic that she made it to a red light on a busy street without ever having to test her brakes after leaving her starting point. I've seen little children try out a friend's bicycle and seeing if it can stop as one of the first things they try.

Fullly agree with you. Many in Thailand will instantly die if they failed to see their hand phone for 5 minutes. Many are always on the phone whatever they do as if they are trading on forex..
