Debt is a form of depression, whether it is a governments debt or San who has just bought his new pickup on a 7 loan from the bank. Affordability is the first thing that should be looked at by the borrower and the lender and a structured payment plan should be in place before the deal is done. Capital borrowing should be different than day to day borrowing and a different interest rate should be used. Student debt is obscene, does a student need to leave education knowing that he is hamstrung before he starts. No! Cut all student interest loans in half to start with. The student is not guaranteed an income although he may be overflowing with qualifications but the interest still has to be paid back whether he is earning 50k a month or 500k. Otherwise the country will continue in its malaise which isn't necessary.

Just write off all the accumulated interest and let them pay the principle amount in equal instalments over a resonably agreed period of time, within which they cannot borrow anymore unless they settle the principle in full.

There are just not enough manila envelopes around for everyone.

But all civil servants wanna have, eh, show a good life, accordingly to the life of their superiors.

Which they usually cant afford. Just from the salary. Both groups

Tackle that problem helps better, me thinks.

And would serve the taxpayer
