Definitely agree there. Ubon is well up there on my list as well. Easy to get around and a good base for forays into the countryside. I stay at the Yuu Hotel usually, perfect location in town.

For once I agree with you...  I love the old part of the city.  That's the area bordering the Mun river around Thung Si Muan (the main square in the heart of the city).  However - just like in Bangkok - the new town with the modern shopping malls doesn't have my fancy.

My favorite place to stay in Ubon is the Nartsiri Hotel.  Unbeatable for price/value with its super clean and comfortable rooms, friendly service and its great and rich quality breakfast buffet.

And when you are on a very tight budget, the 21 Ratchabutr Hostel - actually more a home-stay - is also worth considering. It is located in the 'old town' of Ubon, 100 meter from the Mun river (with bars/restaurants with river-view), 50 meter from the local market, and approx 150 meter from the main Ubon town square (Thung Si Muang).  In short > the best possible location to discover Ubon (the home-stay also rents scooters to its guests).

I think it closed down in September last. Went along in December and there was big stuff going on. A few weeks ago I passed and it was still not being let out for any business.
