Better yet, they might want to revisit and rethink the unnecessary protocol and bureaucracy that surrounds all foreign resident visas. 

Some of us recall the good old days of residency [pre-Thaksin].

Please just do it. There is no logical reason to restrict Japan, Australia, New Zealand, UK, EU, USA, Canada and South Korea to only 30 days. They could easily extend to 60 days without a problem.

i overwinter in Thailand - last years 45 day extension made it much less of a pain.
