"

As he neared the accident site, which has a hump bridge over the drainage canal, he encountered a district office water truck watering plants, leading him to brake suddenly.

Unable to stop in time, he swerved and lost control, resulting in the vehicle falling into the Vibhavadi roadside canal."

So basically going too fast for the road conditions.

Common sense is to consider risk versus reward

The phrase (it's just) “common sense" can be a problematic shortcut. It is used  by people who can’t see beyond their nose ad assume that everyone thinks in the same way and has the same values – (e.g. you subjective use of “reward”)

One can agree that "common sense" isn't entirely useless. It provides a set of shared, practical guidelines for everyday life, helping us navigate familiar situations and build basic social interactions. It's a good starting point for making decisions, but it's always crucial to realise it’s limitations especially when trying to analyse a topic scientifically or through critical thinking.

"common sense" is heavily influenced by factors like culture and upbringing. Cultural norms and family traditions education shape our expectations and behaviours, deeply affecting what we consider to be "common sense." We need to be aware of this. Our knowledge and  experiences influence how we interpret situations and what solutions we deem obvious - these are not universally held. Each person's cognitive abilities, personality, and biases affect how they perceive and navigate the world again these are individually held and it is important to recognise that others don’t think that way.

Here's some examples..

When someone relies on "common sense" they usually have no evidence to support their claim, it often indicates a lack of critical thinking. They're assuming their perspective is universally shared and readily accepted, which isn't true.

It’s a reinforcement of bias: Invoking "common sense" can be a way to reinforce you own existing biases without actually  acknowledging them. This is used to silence, avoid or dismiss alternative viewpoints, that you don’t agree with particularly when combined with racial stereotyping.

Using the term "common sense" often carries an implicit but fallacious claim to authority, suggesting that the speaker's viewpoint is inherently correct and unquestionable. This can be an attempt to shut down criticism prevent further inquiry.

People fail to acknowledge how subjective and culturally dependent the concept is.

In reality, what constitutes "common sense" is often subjective and heavily influenced by one's cultural background, personal experiences, and upbringing. What appears obvious to you might be completely unfamiliar or even offensive to another.

Blindly accepting "common sense" without questioning it can hinders one’s understanding of a topic, it avoids true discussion, discourages curiosity, and is the opposite of critical thinking.
