Well, if they start cracking down on sex offenders in Pattaya, the place will become a ghost town.

That is a very narrow, and untrue, view of what the City is now, or ever was.  Are you suggesting that all who come to the City, searching for sexual adventure are 'sex offenders'? Clearly that is nonsense.  Perhaps in the 1970s/80s, when European visitors predominated, some 'offenders' roamed around the place, but no longer is that the case. I'm sure that some are still around, as they are in every holiday City,  but the City would not notice if they were all found and thrown out of the country.

" a German and an American who, after arrests, managed to slip away under questionable circumstances."

Nothing 'questionable' about it they paid bribes and were allowed to escape as a direct result. Standard police corruption on the part of the Royal Thai Police nothing unusual at all.

This case become very hot due to the fact that the police chief himself was giving a press conference after the arrest and those recording were included in the documentary. It is a embarassment to the authorities as the person just left the country without much difficulty. May be those involved in this loophole might have tought that this is another under the carpet case. However it exploded with the person decided to make some benefit out if it. Not sure how much he would have made from the broadcasting company. And everything now backfired him. He should have kept quiet in view of the deep shit that he is in. However he decided to "Fart" and it resulted in a very foul smell everywhere.....
