I would have thought having an empty eye socket was worse than a non functional eye, unless you’re a pirate.

Sounds to me like they're not expecting it to work, just experimenting with the nerve regeneration issue; still, higher, ever higher, as they say. I imagine the ultimate aim in this area of research would be to reconnect spinal nerves; it's always so tragic when people, especially young active guys, get paralysed for life
