AirAsia and Vietjet have more convenient services to Da Nang.

AirAsia also fly direct out of Chiang Mai.

True, BUT Vietnam Airlines offers multiple advantages; Full service airline that is part of SkyTeam, including business class and lounges for frequent flyers, better support in the  event of IROPS,  better seat pitch and competitive pricing.

Why they picked 5 Am as a departure is a head scratcher. They are obviously not looking to offer connections to the incoming KLM/AF flights that  all land at BKK after  6 AM. I expect this is intended for short holidays for Thais.      DaNang is being promoted as the safe, clean venue with quality resorts and beautiful beaches. It's like Hua Hin but with high quality beaches and less traffic congestion.  Not the best news for Thailand after Koh Samui is described by Fodors as a tourist destination to avoid.

I don't need full service on a 1hr 50m flight, nor lounge access, just a convenient schedule.

Da Nang's beaches certainly beat the pants off Pattaya, HuaHin and Patong.  Hotels are inexpensive and service is superior.  Taxis or Grab are very cheap but almost unnecessary as one can walk, or run, the wide beach promenade in safety.  Bars and restaurants offer service around the clock although one shouldn't expect the same p4p scene as Thailand.

For the wrong reasons.

Halong Bay is a small part of the Gulf of Tonkin which captures rubbish, plastic waste etc. via prevailing easterly winds and seasonal currents.  Casual observers may be forgiven for assuming all the debris comes from Vietnamese tour operations or coastal communities.

The plethora of cruise operators are regulated and must conform to strict rules which include no-overboard waste discharge, period.
