Its not bizarre nor rare as it sounds. Don't forget they can't regurgitate quickly, what thqey have started to swallow. The snake is probably a Nerodia or an Agkistrodon.

The genus Nerodia get a bad rep probably because they are often kept as wild caught, fresh imports. But one of my favorite snakes was a Nerodia fasciata, a long term captive. I admit to a fondness for this genus.

Nerodia are nonvenomus with an unfair reputation for poor tempermrnt, Agkistrodon are venomous but relatively sweet natured. An Agkistrodon is often reccommended as a first pet viper, for this very reason. The aquaric species is A  piscivorous.
