This is what multiculturalism in a country brings. Hostile tribalistic encounters, between groups of non-natives, effectively public disorder is imported, at cosr to local peace and police time. That and the negatives of a low trust society, as comes with it.

It is really unfortunate that the Brit doesn't know that Phuket has been leased out to Russian now, especially after the Russian-Ukraine conflict.

Seemingly reading the story the main complaint was his choice of music in a Bar frequented by Eastern European men he assumed were Russian.

What it doesn't say was it ABBA, Elvis,or some of that Hip Hop music that Black folk and Thai Bargirls like.

Wonder what triggered these Eastern Europeans.

I have been in Phuket since November 2022.

There does not seem to have been a high/low season this year, it has been busy all year long with tourists from many countries.

I come across many Russians in Makro, Tesco etc., and in Thai restaurants, they all seem very well-behaved and just like the rest of us.

Most are families.

When I go to a Thai restaurant and they are playing Thai music I would not complain after all I am in a Thai restaurant.

I sometimes frequent an Ozzie bar and they of course play Western music, if I went into a Russian restaurant with Russian menus I would expect them to play Russian music, I would not have the arrogance to tell them to change to 'Western Music".

Too many people go around causing problems and then when they are caught out they cry "racism", as a Brit I hear this all the time in the UK, and it does become a bit tiresome.

It is great that Thais can be slightly 'racist' against me while I am here, it just makes me laugh.

May I add, we only have one side of the story.

Well said PB the first thing I thought was it took place in a Bar and what folk see after a few scoops is often different to what happened in reality.

To the black Brit:

Only (in the)  the western world is  pampering minorities (p.c), in all the "rest", about 80% of worlds population, is going after the money the number one business priority!

A Russian leaded restaurant (was it one of the "verandas", perhaps?), is there for the "bratans" and their female companions.

Or for the "big guy", who pays the bill for everyone, as long he can play his own playlist.

On the other hand, if his wife is from a phuket family, not just picked up there, he will have to come back, anyway!

A bit rude I would say,  "not just picked up there", you make Thai women sound like objects.

Now that is real racism.

Yep, more than a few rude ignorant thugs wandering about in their delusion that they run things according to their little boxes of a life....

No, aside that it is just a wording/metaphor, it is an educated "guess".

Aside: People, seeing everywhere racism, are kind of accepting the racial laws of the Nazis!

There is just one race of humans on earth. So, what are the "racism, racism"- whiner then?

But racism is the "better" word, more a killer "argument", as just discriminating is. It seems

I don't know

Pointing out likely probabilities is nor racism

The vast majority of Thai-Farang relationships in Phuket would be a farang meeting a girl not from Phuket who either works in a bar/restaurant/hotel all looking for a farang, or aren't opposed to it

Meeting an actual girl from Phuket lookin for a farang would be in the minority

That's not racist to say so

People pamper minorities, because its profitable. True it is, blacks normally face a ceiling. But they 'dominate' the white monopolised music industry. Capitalism favors multiculturalism.

He got off lightly.

Had he been a black transgender or homosexual, might have wound up the hospital, or the morgue.

Is there any evidence that Russians, are particularly hostike to LGBT? Because thats an anti-Putin canard

Yes there is.  Unless you've been in a cave the past 10 or so years.

Tracked down the post on Reddit.

Small details inadvertently omitted by Thaiger help fill in a few minor gaps.

The comment section below the post on Reddit, is interesting.

I'm a Black British guy with a Thai wife. I've been coming to Thailand for the past decade and experienced racism for the 1st time, not my Thais but Russian in Phukhet.

My wife's family live in Phukhet, this is first opportunity we had to visit them since Covid -19 Pandemic. I met my wide in Phuket in 2016 and have been regularly visiting up until Feb 2020. We arrived in Phuket in mid-september, staying in Karon and Kata beach area. As I said its the first time I have felt discriminated against in Thailand. There have been a number of in what I later found were russian owned businesses.

One blatant example is, my wife and I going for dinner at this small restaurant/bar cosy by the beach. First red flag was that the menu was in Russian only. When we arrived, we were the only ones there and there was large screen and a controller to choose what to play (Music). We selected our favourite playlist and where enjoying the ambience. 10 minutes in a group of Russians arrived and the bar manager promptly turned off the screen to only turn it back on a minute later and pass the controller to the russians, who started playing Russian Music. I went up to them and politely asked, if we could complete our playlist as it had few more songs left. I don't think there could understand me so I used translation App and one of the Russians stood up and said No, and started shouting N**** word go away.

My Thai wife asked the waiters to pack our food for takeaway and said we should just go, but I refused as this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. The bar manager called the police and they didn't really do anything other then write report.

This has completely ruined Phukhet for me and sad to say, will not be coming back. Any one else experience this kind of discrimination in Phuket.

Edit: Just to be clear i'm NOT generalising and saying all Russians I encountered were racist/prejudiced, it something I've experienced recently. In the past I had many interactions with many wonderful Russians and all were cordial and pleasant. to be around. But in Phukhet I've been getting a more of a negative vibe and this experience reinforced it.

Yea, you've been in a cave the past 10 years.  Or you're being intentionally obtuse because you're into Pro-Putin propaganda.

It's also "legal" in Florida, USA., but I wouldn't recommend walking down the street with a rainbow t-shirt on too far outside certain cities or you just might get lynched by retarded Russians, er I mean, red necks.  Same Same.

Russia's nationalistic and ethnocentric shift under Putin the past 10 or so years isn't a closely held secret.  Putin's quite vocal about it in public, so not sure why you got so triggered.   Trump and the Jesus loving MAGA gaggle can only blush with envy at the legislation passed by the Duma in recent years.

I went for a run at a my local athletics track in CM yesterday as was confronted by a large group of loud Americans who had zero understanding or complete ignorance to track etiquette. On reflection my annoyance at them was more because of their obvious presence than anything else.

Much of the attitudes to various ethnic communities is informed more by their omnipresence than anything they may have done. The more of them there are, the more their cultural behaviour gets amplified. The complaints directed towards the Russians are the same complaints directed to Chinese and will apply to the next nation of travellers who select Thailand as their preferred holiday destination, most likely the Indians.
