The employer has every right to take action in this case. The law is clear that every employee is entitled to take 3 days leave in a year where the employer has to pay for that. Yes, the employee has to complete one year to entitled for that 3 days leave. It is not just employed today and take the leave tomorrow.

But maybe better for 'industrial relations' to allow the guy a couple of days leave even if it had to be unpaid in the circumstances.

That should be the way out. However the article did not elaborate the true picture. It looks like skewed....
