"Evil" is nothing more than "bad" at the extreme end of the spectrum. Now oldschooler opined that everything has an opposite. Is that true? Or is that simply a belief, despite observations to the contrary which may merely give the appearance of being true? God doesn't have to have an opposite. Especially if the idea that everything has an opposite is not true. LOL. How true. Every man fears being permanently extinguished. God provides hope that that is not his fate. -

The Devil is a human construct whose existence is valid only to those who believe in him. In other words, an actual Devil would be a personal hallucination. Real whilst at the same time not real. Now I wouldn't want anyone to be fooled to think that it's a simple matter to dislodge long standing personal beliefs which are held to be true. Folks like oldschooler, Pinetree, Vigo, TedG, Grumpish and others make that point abundantly clear. And they kindly offer themselves up as fine examples to illustrate the truth of that statement. Importantly, it should be recognised, however, that we all have long standing personal beliefs which we hold to be true but are not. As difficult, or as impossible, it is for us to change any of the beliefs of the posters I just mentioned so, too, every individual alive similarly harbors their share of false beliefs which seemingly no amount of explanation nor facts can persuade them to see their beliefs for what they are , , , beliefs about reality rather than actual, rockbed conditions of reality. I think everyone, even the aforementioned posters, would agree that us humans are anything but all knowing. And the obvious conclusion that can be drawn from that fact is that since we are not all knowing then it is only inevitable that there are things we think we know but just aren't so. Which is why I oft repeat one of my favourite Samuel Clemens insightful quotes which is, in a way, shocking in it's implications: “What gets us into trouble is not what we don't know. It's what we know for sure that just ain't so.” Only a fool would believe that they've got everything right. Yet every generation tends to believe that their generation knows most all which is to be known and there is little left to discover. I will remind that your question and similar, as whether or not evil or a Devil have any true reality and whether or not they are something of our own creation, are not easily explained and certainly cannot be explained, while imparting proper understanding, via a single sentence, or a single paragraph, or a lengthy post, or a thick tome. I'll quote myself since the below should be thoroughly understood when asking such questions. I had cautioned that to make sense of the idea that evil doesn't exist requires a temporary suspension of current beliefs to allow other ideas to be considered and examined. Either you didn't read my post, didn't understand it, or you failed to heed my advice. Rather than momentarily setting your beliefs aside you instead retained them and attempted an understanding using them as blinders. Doing so makes any new understanding impossible. Your current beliefs prevent you from seeing what else is out there. For one this type of information cannot be categorised as post-modern or any other "system" of thought. Now you have your beliefs about what post-moderism is, as you so bitterly (hat tip BlueSphinx) expressed them. Think of it this way, oldschooler. Reality is what it is and functions as it does despite what anyone believes reality to be or how it functions. The truth of what reality is cannot be conveniently labeled and categorised. It is what it is. Truth. Now as a free human being who can exercise choice then you have the absolute right to make of it whatever you wish. Rightly or wrongly. Wisely or not, as a village idiot might. Here you're simply interpreting me using your beliefs as a filter. Whilst totally unaware of what you're doing since you don't at all understand what beliefs are. Nope. I wasn't in your class. Never even graduated high school. I'm sure you'll have fun with that one. Go ahead, oldschooler. Use that to rip me next. -

Too many times I’ve seen careless consumption of alcohol in Thai establishments! Cheers , knock the glass and down the Hatch , bottoms up, by the Regency Brigade!
