RTN seems to have a fetish regarding submarines. Some time back, an Australian Collins sub made port and was oohed and ahhed by the assembled uniformed visitors. Almost immediately after that, discussion started between Thai and Australian government authorities with the Thais saying they wanted to obtain their own submarines.

To its own detriment and gentle care, the Australian government representatives pointed out why Thailand did NOT need submarines - essentially because their area of operations was too shallow to effectively use them.

I guess big boys do need their toys, though, and now they are either going to get expensive ones that will never be used properly or even end up as 'wharf queens'.
