Japanese don't usually stay in 3 star or less hotels.

Can't say I care. The Thais deserve what they get. It is based upon too many assumptions and too little real time  experience. The strategy bends over backwards to satisfy the Chinese and Indian target markets and always takes the western markets for granted. Little effort is made to develop the western countries or to show a bit of appreciation. It's always China, India and Russia as their desired tourists. Maybe time to stop taking tourists from the west for granted and actually try to promote Thailand there. Of course having a military junta widespread corruption and an ineffective (at best) police force will act as a deterrent to some who come from free countries.

Those things don't really act as much of a deterrent to the two week tourists that make up the bread and butter of the western tourist trade. One thing that doesn't seem to be recognised though, is the resilience of the western tourist trade, even when they are scared off by something they do come back eventually, where as tourists from the Asia-Pacific region never seem to come back in large numbers after a scare.
